Vocational Education and Training (VET) is a job oriented technical training course for students and aspirants to choose a specific career opportunity. This job specific training is meant for a specified career and focuses mainly on providing students with hands on training, instruction, and classes through which a student can gain a diploma or a certificate.

Vocational training happens not only in automotive segment but also in hand trades and tourism. Such programmes also focus on mechanics, skills in retail, plumbing careers, and many. Through this training, aspirants can search specific jobs as they gain the certificate required for it. These trainings are done either in institutes, community colleges, or in trade schools. Bachelor of Vocational Education (B.Voc) is a three-year undergraduate course which is focused on providing adequate skills for a candidate to have the relevant skills relating to a profession. B.Voc was introduced by UGC to ensure that students have adequate skills and knowledge that could make them ready at each exit point of the programme.

One of the major advantages of opting for B.Voc after 10+2 is that the course opens multiple doors not just after the completion of the programme but also during the course. The B.Voc curriculum is mapped with the job role descriptions as per National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) which ensures that graduates have the skills that are valued at every level as per the requirements of the market.

Required Skillset and Eligibility

Vocational training can began from high school and can also be done when a student is a graduate. There are certain vocational courses that are in the form of high school studies. It includes studying of academics, studying major courses and introduction of students to the various trade forms such as- Business, Construction, Art and Craft, Agriculture, Health studies, Information Technology, etc.

For post secondary vocational courses a student needs to be a 10+2 pass out which means he has a basic education for the higher vocational courses. These are generally certificate and diploma courses.

 Bachelor of Vocational Education (B.Voc) Eligibility Criteria

Candidates willing to take up B.Voc for higher education should meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • They have to pass 10+2 from a recognised board or university.
  • They must have obtained not less than 50%-55% marks in aggregate in 12th standard.

Admission Process

In Vocational Training, students are required to meet the minimum age requirement of 16 years to get admitted to the vocational course. For post secondary courses, a high school diploma or a GED is expected of the aspirant to get enrolled. Sometimes there are basic exams held to judge the general knowledge of students.

Eligible candidates must note that they will be selected on the basis of the following:

  • Merit in the qualifying examination/past academic performance.
  • Entrance exam conducted by the institute/university.
